Alternatives to Proctorio
Different Types of Assessments
Consider different types of assessments:
- Consider making your assessment “open book/open note” and design questions that require students to analyze, apply, or synthesize information as opposed to recalling basic facts.
- Consider designing assessments with Canvas Quizzes and a variety of supplemental tools to assist with academic integrity. For example, time limits, shuffling answers, large question banks, not displaying answers, not allowing students to return to the quiz after leaving it, etc.
- Consider redesigning high-stakes, summative exams as papers, projects, or presentations.
- Consider question formats that require personal responses, such as argumentative papers, videos, or brief online presentations.
- Consider replacing high-stakes exams with frequent, lower-stakes assessments, such as concept checks, weekly quizzes, and other cumulative learning assessments.
Consider Using Zoom for Online Proctoring
All University of Chicago faculty, staff, and students have access to a Zoom account which has been integrated into Canvas. This can be leveraged as an easy and free proctoring solution. Once your exam is set up in Canvas and ready to be delivered, you can monitor your students while they take the test by watching their screens and viewing their webcams. For more information, see the Guide to Using Zoom for Online Proctoring.
