Canvas is the University’s learning management system. As the hub of the University’s digital learning environment, Canvas assists instructors with course material organization, communication, and assignment and grading management. It helps students organize their course work and deepen their engagement through built-in and integrated learning tools. To learn more or log in, please visit the Canvas service site.

How We Use Canvas at UChicago

Canvas is the University’s learning management system. Its primary use on our campus is for instructors to manage their courses and engage with the students they teach. They do this by using the various features of the software that allow them to upload or input a syllabus, set up assignments, upload readings and other files and organize the course content, incorporate multimedia, create discussion boards, create online quizzes, engage in online assignment grading, and offer feedback to students (among other things). We also have many non-credit courses that are managed in Canvas, offered either by academic or administrative units. 

 
A secondary use is the organization site. Often a Canvas site is requested for use by a group of people who are working together or collaborating, and they wish to have a common space to share information and engage with each other. This might be a group of instructors teaching the same College Core course, a governance group within the University, or a site for a cohort of students in a particular program.

Support

From online workshops and hybrid office hours to online documentation, we offer support in many forms.  Support ranges from a basic introduction to Canvas to consultation on more in-depth feature usage or learning tool integrations.

  • Online workshops: scheduled quarterly; you can find all events on our workshop schedule.
  • Custom workshops: designed for a group of instructors or a department; please contact us for more information.
  • LinkedIn Learning online course:  take the self-paced course, Learning Canvas (CNetID login required).
  • Online Documentation: we have links to Canvas Guides and our own reference sheets for Canvas features on our Resources page.
  • Showcase Courses: look at a few example courses in Canvas, designed by our own instructors.
