ATS Tech Tuesdays

ATS Tech Tuesdays are your chance to find out what’s new and exciting in the world of digital teaching tools. We’ll have a different topic each week–everything from generative AI to digital accessibility. Tech Tuesdays are held each Tuesday of Spring Quarter, between 12 and 3:30 pm. Events will be held in the Regenstein Library TechBar Studio (Room 160) on the first floor, with the exception of the April 29 and May 6 events, which will be held in the Chicago Language Center (Cobb 211). Free food (light snacks) will be provided!

Spring 2025 Event Schedule

  • March 25: Canvas Course Accessibility Checklist
  • April 1: Get Started with PhoenixAI
    • Curious about AI and not sure where to start? Join ATS as we explore university-supported AI tools like PhoenixAI and Microsoft Copilot. We’ll explore the benefits of these tools and look at how you might use them in your own teaching and learning contexts.
  • April 8: Try Poll Everywhere in Presentations
    • Looking to check in on your students’ learning? Just want to get a sense of the “classroom temperature”? Then classroom polling may be right for you! This week we’ll demonstrate Poll Everywhere, a digital, “clicker-free” polling tool, and show how you can easily integrate it into your PowerPoint presentations.
  • April 15: Canvas Course Accessibility Strength Building
    • Flex your digital accessibility muscles! This week, we’ll show you quick and easy ways to increase the accessibility of your Canvas course sites, using tools integrated with Canvas.
  • April 22: Generative AI Prompt Playground
    • While many people think of generative AI as a tool used (with or without permission) to polish text, produce quick summaries, or get information, with a bit of careful prompting, you can go beyond these use cases. From simulations for students to practice applying new knowledge to instructor-designed chatbots that reference reliable documents, there are many uses of these tools that focus on process rather than product to encourage students to work harder and think more about an issue–rather than taking a shortcut. Stop by to learn about prompting with us!
  • April 29: What’s New about New Quizzes
    • New Quizzes, which offers more question types, better analytics, and other features not found in “classic” Quizzes, is now available in Canvas! Stop by this week for a demonstration of New Quizzes and learn how you can migrate your old quizzes into the new platform.
  • May 6: Annotation Across Disciplines: From Great Books to Scientific Papers
    • Reading in a new language can be an exciting experience but at times an overwhelming and isolating one, with questions and observations you need to save for later discussion. With Hypothesis, a tool within Canvas that allows students to annotate, discuss, and collaboratively make sense of authentic texts like websites, literature, and even YouTube videos, you can make your students’ language learning experience more successful. Join us to see how social annotation can combine reading and discussion to create a social exploration that can breathe some life into in-person discussions and infuse close reading with purpose and specificity. This event will be held in the Chicago Language Center, Cobb Hall, Suite 211.
  • May 13: Ed Discussion and Bots++
    • Join ATS to explore how an AI assistant can be integrated into the Ed Discussion platform. Learn how AI can help you provide timely support, streamline communications, and enhance student learning.
  • May 20: Podcasting in Your Course
    • Looking for a supplement or substitute for traditional essay-writing assessments? Want to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by giving your students multiple assessment options? Podcast assignments showcase your students’ creativity, while also helping them learn new skills! Drop by to find out about effective practices for podcasting assignments, as well as facilities in the Regenstein that you and your students can use for recording.
