Aim for Accessible written across an unfolded map with two location pins over the letter i connected by a dotted path, expressing the theme of accessibility as a journey

Welcome to the Aim for Accessible challenge!

Join colleagues from across the University in a challenge to fix accessibility issues in your Canvas courses. The Pope Tech tool in Canvas makes it easy for you to chart a course toward creating a more inclusive learning environment.

What are we fixing?

Each leg of your journey will focus on one of the skills needed to remediate the top 5 errors in our Canvas courses, as identified by Pope Tech:

  1. Color contrast
  2. Links
  3. Alternative text
  4. Headings
  5. Tables
  6. Bonus quests, if you want to go the extra mile

Roughly 93% of errors are color contrast errors. The table below compares inaccessible colors in Canvas to their accessible counterparts, showing how little adjustment is needed to remedy contrast issues.

What are the benefits?

By participating in the Aim for Accessible challenge, you can:

  • Strengthen access and usability for everyone and support the full participation of all students in your courses
  • Contribute to student success and retention
  • Reduce the potential rush to remediation when someone needs accessible content
  • Copy accessible courses forward to future academic quarters, saving you time
  • Strengthen compliance with the University’s Digital Accessibility Policy and reduce legal risk

How does the challenge work?

  • Sign up to commit to the challenge for one or more of the courses you will be teaching now or in the future. Feel free to choose your own path by tackling the accessibility errors in any order — you’re in control.
    • We recommend starting with one or two Canvas courses for remediation in the Aim for Accessible challenge. You can sign up again in future quarters to work on your other Canvas courses.
  • Fix all of the accessibility errors in your courses from each of the 5 categories by the end of the quarter. Don’t be intimidated; most errors are very easy to fix.
    • Bonus quests: Fix issues and alerts outside of the top 5 listed above to receive special recognition and to make your course more accessible.
  • Ask us for help and support. See below on how to connect with us.
  • Once you are done, collect your reward!

How can I get support?

Our Aim for Accessible support team is here to answer your questions. The support team consists of personnel from the Learning Design Team and Center for Digital Accessibility within Academic Technology Solutions.

We’ll keep in touch with you as the quarter progresses.

Celebrating success!

  • Our Aim for Accessible support team will keep track of progress using Pope Tech.
  • At the end of each quarter, we’ll list participants who complete the challenge on our Aim for Accessible Wall of Fame.
  • As a bonus, we’ll offer rewards (AKA “swag”) to participants who complete the challenge for a course!
