Graduate Students and Postdocs, would you like to gain experience in digital pedagogy, help promote pedagogically sound use of educational technology at UChicago, and get ready to teach blended or fully online courses? We are hiring Digital Pedagogy Fellows for the 2020-21 academic year.


Academic Technology Solutions (ATS) is seeking graduate students and postdocs to assist faculty, TAs, students, and staff in the transition to remote and hybrid teaching in Autumn quarter 2020, and the use of Canvas, Panopto, and other educational technologies thereafter. This position is ideal for those who are interested in incorporating a range of digital educational tools for the traditional face-to-face classroom, preparing to teach blended courses or fully online courses, or exploring the field of instructional design. Graduate students and postdocs from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

You will consult, guide, and support instructors in the pedagogically sound use of technology for teaching and learning. Experience with digital educational tools is not required, but basic digital literacy and computer skills are a must, and candidates must show a willingness to learn new digital tools quickly and independently. You must also have teaching experience. Teaching consultation experience and knowledge of basic pedagogy (e.g. through workshops offered by the Chicago Center for Teaching) is a plus.

Successful applicants will receive training in remote and hybrid teaching and digital pedagogy. They will perform support duties under the guidance of full-time staff. It is expected that Fellows will be able to perform independently the duties described below and will serve as the digital pedagogy liaison for their divisions after they have completed their training satisfactorily.

Position starts in August 2020. Applications accepted until positions are filled. Work hours are flexible, and can range from 10 to 19.5 hours per week when classes are in session, and up to 37.5 hours per week during summer quarter and breaks. Applicants must commit to this position for at least 9 months. Work for this position is conducted remotely until the on-campus activities return to normal.

Essential Duties can include:


  • Assist, develop, and/or lead workshops for faculty, instructors, students, and staff.
  • Provide online and in-person faculty consulting (one-on-one or group sessions) and support in the use of Canvas, Panopto, Zoom or other educational technologies.
  • Liaise with applicants’ department and promote pedagogically sound use of educational technologies.
  • Develop online resources (e.g. documentation, tipsheets, etc.) for Canvas, digital educational tools and digital pedagogy.
  • Research and test new education technology.
  • Complete clerical and other tasks as assigned.
  • Optional depending on experience: Research projects, data analysis, web application development, and/or blogging on the intersection of education technology and pedagogy.


  • Must be detail-oriented, hardworking, and dependable, with a can-do attitude.
  • Must have good communication, presentation, and problem solving skills.
  • Must have teaching experience.
  • Must be open to performing a wide array of different tasks on a day-to-day basis.
  • Must have good basic digital literacy and computer skills.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Word, Excel, Google Docs, Sheets and Drive, with ability to learn other programs (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).


  • Knowledge of basic pedagogy and/or teaching consultation experience (e.g. through workshops offered by the Chicago Center for Teaching) is a plus.
  • Experience in college-level teaching preferred.
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, and/or other web development programming language preferred.
  • Knowledge of LaTex, and/or statistical softwares (R Statistics, STATA), and/or GIS a plus.
